This structure was originally constructed in 1897 as a possible farmhouse, likely by George Rockstroh or his heirs. In 1903, the lot was sold to the real estate develoeprs Hammond and Whitcomb along with the rest of the land that would make up the Hammond and Whitcomb Addition to South Bend. The house was rented and eventually sold to mason Elihu Mendenhall in 1904.
