George L. Hager was the founder of the Hager Medical Company, a manufacturer of ready-to-use medicines, including Oak Balm and Blood and Nerve Restorative. The Hager Medical Company distributed their goods throughout the United States and Europe. In 1908 George L. Hager purchased this site and one year later hired the architectural firm of Austin and Shambleau to design a house for his family. Completed in 1910, the Hager House is one of only a few houses in South Bend of this stylistic form. With its unusual features (including a bellcast roof and fluted Doric columns), it is an excellent example of the Shingle/Craftsman style in South Bend. It is also one of only a few remaining small residences designed by Austin and Shambleau, one of the more prolific, early twentieth-century architectural firms in the city.
