Records date this house to 1877. Christian Louis and Magdalena Benz were the first owners of and residents in this Shingle Style house. Christian owned a wholesale and retail liquor store on Washington Street and passed away in 1895. They raised two sons, Eugene and G. Frederick, an Inspector for the City of South Bend who acquired the property soon after his father's death. The house is also listed as 313 Madison.
