Elizabeth Lemen, widow of John Lemen, purchased this property from Edward Chapin by July 1890. The house was constructed by 1892 for Elizabeth's son, Edward Lemen, a manufacturer of 'blank books.' Mary and Lafayette LeVan, the second owners, purchased the Gabled-Ell home in 1894 and resided here until 1900. Lafayette LeVan was a superintendent for the Oliver Chilled Plow Works.
