This property was once part of John Shetterley's homestead. Charles and Fannie McDonald purchased this property and had this Shingle Style house built between 1893 and 1894. Charles was the editor of the city section of the South Bend Times and was the co-operator of J.B. Stoll and Co., a printing firm. The house remained in the McDonald family until 1919. W. Leslie Chamberlain and his wife, Gertrude, purchased the house in 1920.
