Before purchasing this Gabled-ell between 1896 and 1898, George and Minnie Harrop lived at 526 Portage Avenue (now 626 Portage). George was a manager for several telephone companies (Central Union, Bell Telephone, and Telephone Express) before becoming an independent contractor. The Harrops resided here until 1901, and would live in several houses in the district.
