Built between 1883 and 1884, the home was first owned by William W. Giddings, a well-known councilman, and his wife, Mamie Giddings. By 1885, William had passed away. Mamie married George Clarke, an attorney, county prosecutor, and Notre Dame Law School professor, in 1886. He and Mamie raised three children, Mary (Clarke Coquillard), Agatha and Matthew. In 1895, George married Mary E. Vanderhoof, a socialite who sold the house to John Yeagley in 1911.
